Interview: Herrelandsholdet · 17 Jan 2022

Interview with Simon Kjær who has been nominated for Denmark's Player of the Year 2021. The award show will be broadcast in Denmark on January 21, 2022.

Simon Kjær interview before Sport 2021

Simon Kjær: "I think at some point I have to sit down and I have to go through what really happened in 2021. So much has happened and there has been so much going on both with the club football and the national team, so it has been overwhelming, but at the same time also great to be a part of."

"The support, and the way people have gathered around the national team, and what we all experienced and the way we moved on was just... To see people on the road while we drove to a game, people standing on bridges when we drove into Copenhagen. I never thought I would experience this in my career in Denmark."

"So it has been surreal. The support and joy that is around the national team now is fantastic. And that, of course, is also a motivation for me. The sooner I get back, the sooner I get back there too."

"For me, it's so much about the little details. The details of going for a training, to get better and to do my stuff 100 percent. So I can feel I'm up and I can feel I'm giving something to myself, but also where I'm in my career now, I'm giving something to the team."

"We have a player, who once in a while comes with his mobile phones into the gym, when we are in the process of training. Then I actually stop my training. I go and take his phone, then I put it out in the lockerroom, then I go in, then I start training again."

Simon Kjær: "No one is going to knock me out of my seat. That's when I say to myself, now it's about time. When the day comes, I also know, well I do not have to be any second or third violin. I do not work in that. I want to be the best. I always wanted to be the best. I have always had a healthy humility, but at the same time also an awareness that if I do not think I am, then I am not either."

"So it has been surreal. The support and joy that is around the national team now is fantastic."

"The people I play for, at the same space, my central defense colleagues. I need to have the best relationships with them, because I need them so I can do my best. I'll never ever get angry or annoyed that another defender is playing before me, because it has nothing to do with him. He does his thing, I do my thing, and then there is a coach who decides. My hunger has probably got bigger, because I'll probably keep those guys behind me..."
